One of the biggest reasons people become discouraged with the therapy process is that they did not like the kind of therapy they received and felt frustrated trying to find another therapist to open up to that is a good fit for them.
Some different types of outpatient therapy are individual, couples, family or group therapy. There are a vast variety of approaches that therapists utilize when working with clients. You may have heard of some of these approaches before like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) or Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT). The important question is: Which is right for you? You should know who you would like to be included in treatment to help determine the type of therapy you would like while the approach for treatment should be based on the presenting problem, participants in therapy, and the personalities of those involved in treatment.
I consider myself an eclectic therapist meaning that I utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques from different theoretical approaches when working with clients based on who is all included in treatment and the presenting problems. I developed my style with the understanding that one therapy approach does not fit all! What therapy looks like for someone who experienced the loss of a loved one can look very different than someone who is having problems in their marriage. Some therapists utilize just one specific approach which can limit the effectiveness of treatment. You are not expected to know what therapy theories and approaches are best for you. That is the role of the therapist. I stay up to date on the latest research and am knowledgeable in the vast amount of theories and approaches that exist in order to be as effective as I can be. I want to make sure that I serve every client with the precise treatment that they need so each person can fulfill their goals and live a more meaningful life.
I am a licensed marriage and family therapist so my expertise is in working with couples and families, as well as individuals. No matter whether I am treating an individual, a couple or a family, I view problems with a systemic lens. The short explanation of that means I do not attribute just ONE thing to be the reason for a problem to occur but that there are multiple factors that lead to a stressor. Click on the links for the different services I provide where I explain the approaches I use for each briefly.
Finding the right kind of therapy for you and your loved ones shouldn’t be hard. Reach out to learn more and I will do my best to help find what is right for you. If there’s a service or approach I do not provide, I will gladly give you a referral if I have one! 🙂
